When trying to access the web, it comes up with message that says Access is Forbidden, contact your Access Controller, we have adjusted the security levels downwards slightly, and it allowed us in, but now it is again saying Access Denied, and if we lower security any more, we get another message saying unknown zone and we are denied again

sure, you just have to turn off the antivirus. I assume you have the security suite 05 or something. Just bring up norton and go to antivirus, turn off antivirus and youre good to go. A good free antivirus is Avast, you can get it at download.com, it works very well, just make sure you dont run both antivirus programs at the same time, they would probably have a problem with each other running.
AVG will work with Norton, BUT.. when you don't renew Norton, the virus database doesn't update. I was running last year's Norton with AVG (free). Neither said I had a virus, but I knew I had one from my pc acting goofy.
I found avast.com and downloaded their free antivirus. It found two viruses. I uninstalled Norton, and now run AVG and Avast. I just haven't remembered to uninstall AVG. I think I'll do that now!

you have to let go of norton craps, go to symantec.com, there's a norton removal tool there, but first install my personal choice of free anti-virus, Avast 4 Home Edition; go to avast.com, download the 4.7 home edition, don't forget to register for free so that you can avail of 14 months real time protection and free regular database and program updates.

You can only password protect folders and windows XP professional. If you're running XP home or media edition, you'll have to find a freeware program somewhere on the Internet. Just make sure when you download the program you tell it to save to your my documents file and scan it with an antivirus scanner before you run the program. Good luck!
Sharing Files, Folders and Printers with other computers on your network or on the same computer needs to be allowed by the Administrator of the machine. Each person that uses the machine can be assigned their own password to get into windows and you can ''Limit'' their entry or give them ''unlimited access'' which will not only allow for file sharing..but for sharing the printer, etc. They can also be limited to certain functions like The Ability to Download or Change Programs, System Repairs and/or other administrative duties. This helps when you have an office full of workers whose duties include using the computers. Some may be allowed to get into the bosses files and some may not, depending on the limits that are established. To do this, when booting the computer, sign in as Administrator and you'll easily find the areas to make any changes necessary. instead of a user name and password, you can set up each shared folder with security to only let certain users in. This means they would have to know your password to log on with as you to get in the folder.
To set this up, right click the folder and click properties. select the security tab. Click add, and add your user name. After this, give yourself full rights.
Now go into any other users listed in the security window. Delete them.
This will ensure that only you have rights.
Also, I'm assuming this is in your home and not in a work/networked enviornment. If it IS, you wont want to get rid of administrators. :)
I am downloading NIS 2007 to my computer from Symantec's upgrade and renewal center ... I would rather have had a cd of it but I am getting the upgrade at my renewal price which is a pretty good deal...anyway my questions are:
1. Am I right in that I have to remove 2003 BEFORE

They should tell you before you begin the installation process if you should remove the 2003 version first - if not, don't go ahead until you contact them. If you delete it in the Add/Remove programs window, it should get rid of everything. Once you download, your Installation Wizard should tell you what to do step by step.

The browser crashed on me and I manually shut it down, then restarted the computer because it was slow. Its not a security flaw. Its a problem with Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Mail and Firefox.

I have Ubuntu 5.10 dual booted with windows xp on my computer. I got it because all the linux people are like ''windows sucks get linux.'' I installed a fresh Windows XP on my other computer, went to Windows Update and got the latest updates and then installed Paltalk. No AV software, no anti spyware, no other apps except default windows apps, Just Paltalk. Shortly after on Paltalk I started getting popups to about.com, not long after I was infected by drive cleaner. I did not initiate any connections to other websites. Only Paltalk did this.
The computer is NAT translated thru my linksys router so it cannot be directly connected to via the outside internet, and the only program running was Paltalk.
I've done this several times, and the results are the same. It seems after I install AV software the popups to about.com no longer occur, nor any infections or any infection attempts alerted to me thru AV software.
search for Paltalk and drive cleaner on google and found alot of hijackthis logs show paltalk being installed. Not good evidence to go by so I need others help in verifying my theory. Applies to free version only

During a Norton System Scan, my computer crashed and I had to reboot. Now Windows cannot load and I get a blue screen error message saying I need to uninstall the Virus scan program. have you tried going into safe-mode... whenever your computer is booting up press the F8 key before it gets to the windows loading screen and choose safe mode from the choices it gives you and then go to control panel add/remove programs and delete it from there.
*edit* sorry I didn't see your additional details until now... almost sounds like maybe a memory problem. If you have more than one stick of RAM in your computer I would suggest taking one out at random the powering it up and see if it will boot. If it doesn't try putting that RAM back in and taking the other out.... Sometimes RAM can be damaged just slightly enough that it lets you think the computer is going to work but in reality not so.
And of course make sure your computer is turned off when you are removing/replacing your RAM. If you don't have 2 sticks in your computer you might want to consider getting a cheaper stick of memory that is compatible and seeing if that is the problem. not 100% on this but its a good thing to check.
Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking and running the Norton Removal Tool. To get into Safe Mode, reboot and then either hold down or tap the F8 key repeatedly while the computer is starting up. Then hopefully you can access the internet and go to the Norton page below. You have to choose the correct tool to run.

My laptop computer has been affected by a trojan virus. Okay, I have tried a couple of so called free downloads that want you to pay money to delete the virus. at the toolbar on the bottom theres that K symbol and you put your mouse over it and it says Kaspersky Interent Security. when i click it, theres a window that pops up and on the right hand corner it says Statistics. when i click on statistics theres this other wondow that pops up that says protection. then theres tabs that says Detected, Events, Reports, Quarentine, and Backup. under backup theres 2 things under with a red exclamation point next to it and then it says infected: Trojan program Trojan-Download. theres two of them. what does that mean? when i click one, at the bottom you can click on either delete or restore. what should i do ?!
Whatever your problem is, if the infected file is not important to you, just delete them. Or if it is important to you, don't delete it but NEVER restore them. These are Trojans. They will send information from your computer secretly and you'll never know.
If you cannot decide what kinds of files are infected, consult any expert.
This is a security antivrus program, the red exclamation mark is possibly a request for you to scan your computer for nasties.
Or it may be just drawing your attention to a scan result, and had found something, if it give the name of the Trojan, you can google it, and find out if it is a nasty, then delete it.
If Kaspersky is unable to delete it then put it in quarantine.
If there are still problems, the Google result will guide you to where you can finally get rid of it

As a security professional I can tell you that whoever is giving you that bad advice does not know what they're talking about.
If you are paying for a security suite and you know how to use it and have no major problems using it.. then I would advise you to stick with it, to make sure it is their complete suite (ie, 360), to ensure it is properly configured and kept completely up to date.
The only people who will knock norton and hock freeware are biased people who are not true professionals. The best advice I can give you is to stop listening to them and trust in something called ''common sense'' which is the cornerstone to good security.
I would also recommend you ensure your OS is completely up to date with windows updates.

You might have a corrupted profile. If you go to c:\documents and settings\(Your profile name). Rename your profile name to something else, I usually put a ''.old'' at the end. When you do this, relog and log back in. The error will probably go away. Your profile name is whatever you log in with, if your not sure what it is, it;s probably administrator

After you've installed windows, go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update everything. Microsoft will/can have a lot of bugs and openings fixed that can help keep you secure. Do this regularly (check every month or so).
Then i would recommend installing an anti-virus program, preferably AVG. Norton/Macafee seriously slow things down and can keep you from being able to access the internet at all.
Then you need to install anti-spyware and set it to auto-run once a week, or run it manually *AT LEAST* once a week. And i would recommend using more than one. Try using AdAware and AVG anti-spyware, or SpyBot. Some will catch what others won't.

Mcafee and Norton really aren't all that great. Try downloading Avast! antivirus. It's free for home use, all you have to do is register it. That should catch any viruses you have coming through. Whenever I use limewire and there is a virus threat an Avast screen comes up warning me about it.

I'm having troubles with Internet Explorer. I've heard of others here with similar problems. My taskbar and start button on bottom of screen are missing. My Yahoo and Google toolbars on top of the screen are missing. The Explorer toolbar on top of screen only appears when I roll over it with the mouse. I'm running McAfee Security Center, allegedly with virus protection, spamkiller, firewall, all turned on and running. I've done 2 virus scans and McAfee found nothing. Any ideas, input, advice, would be appreciated.

Ok like two months ago I uninstalled Norton 360 and I thought all was well. Ok then like 2 weeks ago my stuff that needs to update via internet servers could not. I thought nothing of it and decided that the program it self was at fault. Today I bought Hal-Life 2 and installed it the when I tried to play it it said the error Unable to load library steam.dll. So I looked online toseek a solution and on a website it said that my firewall was blocking the updating Steam does. So I turned of my firewall and reinstalled Half-Life 2 and well same error message came. So I look at the security settings and it is saying that Norton 360 reports fire wall is running. I look at and and wonder how the hell is Norton personal firewall is running when I uninstalled it? I go to the add/remove program thing and I see that Norton 360 is there so I click on it then I click on the uninstall button. And the little hour glass comes out next to my mouse and then it dissapears. SO keep trying and it still not.

Basically when I am playing BF2142 (a game), after 30-1hour its slows down to where the came is choppy and it isn't lag, the cd or hd is spinning too. I exit and browsing and opening up programs is slow. I restart and its all fresh again. I know the longer windows runs, it loses speed but this is horrible. I think it might be the SLi??? But this has only started a few months ago. Lately the game will freeze then come back alive again and be all slow.
I have AVG Internet Security and had Zonealarm so I don't think its them.

You can also try deleting your video cache and let the game reoptimize it. Just in case, the location is ''\My Documents\Battlefield 2142\mods\bf2142\cache'', just delete everything in this folder then start the game and load a map in single player. Dont move the mouse while it is loading/optimizing, just let it do its thing until the map loads up.

I just received my denial letter from disability stating that despite incurable Nystagmus, constant dizziness, frequent fatigue, cognitive impairment, impaired balance, impaired motor skills, numbness in both hands, rigidity in both legs and pain and weakness and impaired motor function in my left leg - they still believe I can function in the accounting field. Umm, what? What planet do these people making these decisions come from?? Even if I were able to sit in front of a computer 8 hours a day 鈥?which I can鈥檛 - how would they expect me to get there?? Drive and kill everyone on the road or take public transportation which I couldn't even make the walk to get to just to get jostled and pushed under a bus?!?!?! My attorneys are going to appeal the decision but most days I don't even feel like getting out of bed. All these forms and phone calls are draining the little energy I do have. Please tell me there are others out there with experience and words of encouragement. :'-(

My pc at home is getting old and I realize I need to buy a new one. It has 256 mb ram, 7 gb hard drive, windows 2000, 466 mhz processor. I have tried adding a lot of software to it but that seems to have slowed it down considerably. You are right on the MONEY if you stick with Windows 2000 and the 256MB of RAM. Here are some tips:
1. Yes, I would use Zone Alarm as well as your router's firewall. It just makes sense to have protection on the INSIDE as well as the OUTSIDE.
2. You also need an Anti-virus program. An older version of Norton Anti-virus would do the trick, but avoid the ALL IN ONE, or Internet Security versions of any of these. You also need anti-spyware cleaners like Ad-aware and SpyBot Search %26 Destroy. Get the free versions from http://www.download.com
3. Just about ALL of your startup programs can be deleted. Actually, you can get a copy of MSCONFIG.EXE from someone else's Windows XP and copy that into your WINDOWS folder. Then you can use MSCONFIG to experiment and TURN OFF some of the startup options.

so my anitivurs picked this up on my computer and i cant seem to get rid of it or find info online to show me how.
Windows explorer closes out because of an error when i try to open folders or work with them, my net usage and access is fine..no prob there.
i ran spybot and my NOD32 which both discovered this file but nod cant access or clean it because it seems to be password protected.
I did a system restore a week back as i only started having problems last night but the restore failed to fix my problem. I cant seem to be able to back up any further on restore than a week as restore comes up as incomplete.
No other trojans, threats or melware detected in NOD this is only file i am having issue with.
How do i get round the password protect issue and how do i remove this from my computer...i cant work with my explorer of files until it is gone it seems...how nasty is this thing?...am getting no DR. WATSON alerts as yet, just windows explorer

It sounds like one of many different viruses written for MSN/Windows Messenger over the years. Your best bet would be run a capable anti-virus program (there are a few available for free, e.g. AVG Free edition) which should remove the virus for you in a fairly straight-forward fashion. These days manual removal of viruses (especially something as integrated as with MSN/Windows Messenger) is usually a fairly risky business. I've been ''fixing'' Windows computers for years, but I still leave virus removal up to software that really knows what it's doing.

tells you to click the ''fix'' button, and most of the time when that has occurred it does, but this time it says ''can't fix due to error''. Does anyone know what that means, and/or how do I locate that in my computer. I have tried on my own, but I need help from someone who knows what to do.....please SMART computer people can you help me locate that?????

1 Open McAfee by double clicking on the McAfee Icon to the right in your taskbar. wait a few seconds for McAfee to launch.
2 Where it says Internet, look over to the right, the error is usually written in yellow, click on ignore.

I know exactly what you're talking about because that used to happen to me every 5 seconds....ehh as for fixing it, I'm not sure cuz my mom usually messes with that but I clicked it once and clicked ''Fix'' and it worked out fine after that.
CounterSpy is another security thingy that works A LOT better than McAfee. I have that on my computer also but I ignore McAfee and use that one instead. I think its easier to use too.

you should'nt use McAfee when i had it it didn't let me do any thing i dont know what the problem was it didnt realy protect me it would just block me from websites i prefer avg because it can heal viruses and it is free.
On my Aunt's computer, she told me that she paid for a new subscription or something with Norton Internet and has the bank records to prove it. However, it keeps telling her that her computer is not protected.

I know many people that have had troubles using the Norton Anti-virus on-line RENEWAL. It takes a great deal of time to contact Symantec and get it straightened out. Because of this, I recommend that people IGNOR the on-line renewal method, and go to a RETAIL store to buy the Norton Anti-virus package, which includes a CD.
- The CD simply does not FAIL, use ADD/REMOVE to uninstall the old Norton Anti-virus, LiveUpdate and LiveReg. Reboot and install from the CD.
- Should you ever have other computer problems, YOU HAVE the CD to reinstall it. (If your hard drive crashed totally, the CD would be available, where the download file would be GONE).
- This is another amazing fact. Quit often, the Norton Anti-virus package from a Retailer might actually be CHEAPER than the on-line update. Quite often, the package upgrade rebate reduced the cost to LESS than the download.

i dont know how you can do that but i know how to password protect it. use winrar compress it then while compressing go to the advanced settings and put a password on it so that it can only be viewed with the password
Ok here's the deal. Ill make this as short but detailed as I can. I have a wireless internet provider. a D-link 604 wired router with latest firmware.
My network consists of my computer and my xbox 360, both are static ip address. For some reason on one game - NCAA 08 and 07. on my 360 I am always dropping connection to my opponent. does not happen on anyother game. I have ports open for xbox live and also have my 360 in DMZ.
Whenever I drop. I look at my router log and it says Twinge Attack Detected - Packet dropped. with the date of April 1, 2002 ''april fools day'' always same date not the same time. all other logs show normal date.

A twinge attack is simply when a computer sends a little bit of data and then floods you all at once. Think of it as a person whispering to you and then suddenly SHOUTING AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS ABOUT RANDOM STUFF YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND AND SEEMS TO HAVE NO END. Like your router, you would simply tune them out. A twinge attack, to be technical, is an ICMP flood message. It's used to crash a system by sending them too much information. The bad news is, is that this is more than likely a fault in NCAA 08 and not your router. The people that made the game appear to have a BIG bug in their network code. I'd email their tech support and see what they're doing about it. They should release a patch. There's nothing you can really do about it. Though I do find it strange, usually a DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ) doesn't get monitored or protected by the router. Have you tried using a friend's wireless router to see how things go?

You need to have a separate product for each other.....the one that you have now won't work on a second computer. Symantec will block it. Don't worry, you can build your own security suite for free, and it will protect you much better than Norton does!!

depending on the registration key that you purchased, you may not be able to. Since NIS goes out to nortons site to update itself it validates. It may be against the TOS to use it on more then one computer.
This problem has been going on for quite a while, and it's getting a bit old. Just about every time I go to print something off the internet, I get this message in a pop up window:

Basically, I just click on the print option again and again until it works, and it always varies on how many times I have to do it. This happens whether I use the print icon, Ctrl + P, or go into the file section.
Also, my computer has been failing to restart itself unless I press the manual restart button on my CPU.
Is this due to a virus, a program deletion, or my older computer? Please help!

This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

My computer has crashed a few times from dumb viruses and its absolutely ridiculous because we have to give it to my uncle for like a week and he totally wipes everything off. I also know how to turn it on safe-mode and just restore it to a week before but I dont want to have to do that. I've heard something about this AOL shield thing, can someone tell me if that makes your computer slow like Norton and do they make you install AOL? Because I never thought AOL was great and it makes me nervous to get it. If someone could help that would be great!

I know this seems like a little much, but on my computer I have Norton Internet Security (which I've paid for and I like it very much) and I have three FREE anti-spyware programs that detect and remove almost all spyware. I use Ad-Aware SE, SpyBot Search %26 Destroy, and SUPERAntiSpyware. The reason I have so many is because I've noticed that one will detect other errors that one scanner missed. Not that you need to download all of them, but that just what I use. The last three I named are all free and work nicely. Good luck.
I have AOL Active Shield (which is the anti-virus) and I love it. They dont make you download AOL (cause I hate AOL anyway LOL). I also had norton and it slowed down my computer until I uninstalled it. Its also powered by Kaspersky which is the best anti-virus that money can pay for.

you need to pay for a new key as a Norton license only lasts a year, i believe. if u do not have the newest version it is cheaper to just buy the newer version. if u don't feel like shelling out up to 80 bucks then i suggest going to tucows.com and searching for a virus scanner. this will tell u what the best out there is and many are free, whoever i do not suggest the AOL one as it is full of Trojans that are just as bad as viruses if not worse.

I don't really want to do it, but my neighbor keeps bugging me saying that she will pay me $10 per month. To me this sounds like a bad idea but I need more info because she won't leave me alone until I have a valid reason for saying ''no''.

If any of you download a worm or a virus then you can easily send it to each, without you knowing. Use a firewall such as Zonealarm to prevent this. She can also find a hole in your computer where she could potentially crack open your computer and steal your infomation.
For my computer and for you choose why should i pick the one you choose over the other one? This is for a home computer and I dont know much about secuirty systems and what to look for

I personally use McAfee. I prefer it to Norton because McAfee will perform its updates a single time and you will get all of them... whereas Norton has a tendancy to perform an update and then if you force a manual update you will find there are more to be downloaded. .. This worries me.
However, I think that either is a good choice as long as you go for the entire suite with antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc... such as 360 or the mcafee total plus.

AVG has a bad detection rate.
Use Avast! anti-virus, theres a free version too and its like 10x
better than AVG.
Or you could manually download updates of AVG's site.
Maybe another anti-virus/spyware program is blocking it.
Only have one anti-virus program running active at once.
There are two things that can interfere with the automatic update feature. One is having it set for a specific time and not checking the box for updating when the computer comes online if it is not online at the time for the update. The other problem may me your computer's hybernation feature. Some computers will not come out of hybernation to update files or run comprehensive virus scans. Mine does, but my wife's does not.
Try checking the box for updating the next time the computer is connected to the internet if it is not connected when AVG tries to update. If that does not work, e-mail AVG with the details of your computer and its operating system. They will want to know about the problem, and they should be able to help you.

Simple answer, the worm gets in, uses a command line to open and use a program that has an opening and does something (usually malious). The solution to this is not a realistic thing, force the user to verify EVERY file that the CPU tries to open.
U can create a virus just by using C++ or VB/pro, so if C++ and vb/pro create vireses, then vireses run like programs and some programs can't work together. about addresing the security, well first i would start by finding out what kinda security i need, then comes the application development. sorry couldent be more help full.
When hacking, you need to figure out ways to close programs that may come in your way, or you need to figure out ways to disable the Firewall settings. (I'm not a hacker)

It is because hacking involves a lot of programs. Programs sometimes interfere with each other. It's like windows drivers often interferes with its OS.
